Week 3: Health Care Issue Art Heals

Ways that May Heal but not Cure

Art interventions have a very secure place in the practice of alternative medicine. Art, music and

poetry interventions provide “holistic care” to all patients but especially well received by those who

have limited options. “To be present in mystery in ways that may heal us but not cure us.”(Dr.Rafeal

Campo) 2014 Data from the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine has shown that there

has been a rapid increase in demand by physicians—particularly specialists—for certification in

integrative holistic medicine. “Being a good doctor is about more than scientific knowledge. It also

requires an understanding of people,” says American Association of Medical Colleges president and

CEO Darrell Kirch. Integrative medicine is a practice that reaffirms the importance of the

relationship between practitioner and patient, focuses on the whole person, is informed by evidence

and makes use of all appropriate therapeutic approaches, healthcare professionals and disciplines to

achieve optimal health and healing.
In supporting health and well-being, art, dance, poetry, drama, dance and expressive art provide an

intensive, hands-on experience with a variety of expressive arts activities as part of an integrative

approach to healthcare. Models for integrative healthcare and application of the arts are presented

with an emphasis on both mind-body principles and health psychology. Arts based approaches have

been researched and are evidenced based-to support stress reduction and when stress is relieved then

healing or comfort can begin.

“I've learned that people will forget what you said ... will forget what you did, but people will never

forget how you made them feel."  Dr. Maya Angelou
